MARCH 6, 2021 - IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM OUR SCOUTMASTER
To Mackinac Island Honor Troop Scouts and Families:
I hope this finds you all safe and well.
I am really having a hard time drafting this letter.
The State of Michigan, its leaders, and Mackinac Island Scout Service Camp has, for the second straight year, cancelled the Scout Service Camp. I know their interest is in keep all safe and healthy, but with our State re-opening up a little more all the time and with over two months to go before opening the camp, I believe cancelling is a mistake. Our Troop's Adult Leadership also sent a safety proposal to the State for their review that we believe would have allowed the camp to open, but in a different fashion. The State's Safety Task force spent time reviewing our plan, but ultimately decided they still were not able to reopen the camp.
I realize soon that other Mackinac Troops would not have wanted or have been able to attend, but I was still hoping that the State would open the camp for those that would like to participate. I feel the youth in America need to try and get back to something normal and I was hoping and praying that this was a great step ahead. I do pray that your home Troops are trying to meet and work with the Scouts.
I am sorry for the older Scouts again. I know what a last year means to you all. The different days with different activities.
Other than letting you that the State has decided to cancel the camp this year, all other thoughts are my own. I don't want to offend anyone, and if so, I apologize.
Please keep your emails open. I may try and have a meeting later this summer just to stay in touch, especially for the last year Scouts.
Again, I am sorry for this news, but hopefully things are getting better and next year we can all get together in January.
Yours in Scouting,
Kirk Seibert Scoutmaster, MIHT 168
